Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill 2022

The Rajya Sabha on Monday, Dec 12th passed the Energy Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2022. The Bill proposes to amend the Energy Conservation Act 2001, last amended in 2010.

Key Points of the Bill:

  • The bill seeks to mandate the use of non-fossil sources, including green hydrogen, green ammonia, biomass, and Ethanol for energy and feedstock.
  • Bill aims to set up carbon credit markets in India. Carbon Credit is a tradable permit or certificate
    that provides the holder of the credit the right to emit one ton of carbon dioxide or an equivalent of another greenhouse gas.
  • Bring large residential buildings within the fold of the Energy Conservation regime.
  • Amend penalty provisions
  • Increase members in the governing council of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)
  • Standards for vehicles and vessel
